LAN3 performs three different types of wireless survey: predictive site survey (normally free of charge), on-site verification survey (chargeable) and wireless validation survey (chargeable). These surveys play an essential role in ensuring that, not only the locationing of the access points is optimal, but also that the wireless configuration has been optimised. Ensuring these two elements are correct is essential for the smooth running of any WIFI system, and yet all too often neither is done satisfactorily.
The Predictive Wireless Survey service is provided by the LAN3 Service Centre, and gives customers an indicative scope of wireless access point (AP) deployment, for budgetary purposes. The Customer is required to present LAN3 effective up to date digital floor plans, from which a predictive survey report can be produced, using market leading Ekahau software. The completed report is returned to the customer, with an indicative number of access points and their approximate placement. The report can be used to make decisions surrounding allotting suitable budget for the project.
It is highly recommended that a Wireless Verification Survey be performed prior to final purchase decisions of APs. This verifies all assumptions made in the predictive service.
The Verification Wireless Survey service is provided by the LAN3 Professional Service Team. It provides confirmation of access point requirements and their exact placements, also useful for for cabling and implementation services. LAN3 utilise the previously performed LAN3 predictive survey as a baseline for the verification survey and Aerohive Access Points (APs) for performing the survey.
The survey results in a Verification Survey Report for customer use. This highlights in both summary and detailed forms, the findings and recommendations to be applied to the implementation of the wireless network.
The Validation Wireless Survey service is provided by the LAN3 Professional Service Team. It presents a validation of recently commissioned or modified wireless system and assurance the system is optimised according to the live wireless environment. If wireless interference is discovered spectrum analysis tools will be used and changes made accordingly.
Changes will also be made to configuration, during the survey, to ensure all standard settings are correct, including Signal to Noise Ratios (SNR) and signal strength (RSSI).
LAN3 has installed over 350 wireless networks in the UK. Each new deployment is surveyed to ensure the wireless network will be optimised for coverage, capacity and performance. The importance of a good site survey can not be understated, which is why LAN3 have invested in 7 CWNA trained engineers. The CWNA course concentrates heavily on the survey side of wireless, as it is one of the most important factors in any wireless deployment.
